Garry Tan is a designer, engineer, and investor. He is the co-founder and managing partner of Initialized Capital, Initialized Capital is an early-stage venture capital fund that was earliest in Coinbase and Instacart. He worked for Microsoft as a Program Manager for Windows Mobile from 2003 to 2005. He was an early employee at Palantir Technologies’ financial analysis platform from 2005 to 2007.
Tan co-founded Posterous, a blogging site, in 2008, which garnered $5 million before being purchased by Twitter in 2012. After Posterous was shut down, he co-founded Posthaven. He started as a designer in residence at Y Combinator in 2011 but was swiftly elevated to partner, where he stayed until November 2015. He helped develop a directory of “the greatest and brightest interaction designers and visual designers” while a partner at Y Combinator. On August 1, 2013, Harjeet Taggar, and Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, secured $39 million for a different fund named Initialized Capital, which searches for high-quality founders first and then tries to see whether they can aid or understand a company’s market. Tan was named on the Forbes Midas List in 2018 and 2021.
